In Ancient Egypt, the practice of speaking with the dead was known as Konxar (pronounced kon-zar). This practice was among many used along the Nile to show respect to those who had passed from earth. Konxar was used for guidance and even to chat with Auntie Isis.
The first known written version of Konxar were glyphs carved into stela. That doesn’t mean the Egyptians necessarily invented this process. Similar glyphs on stone tablets have been found in Chich’en Itza where the Mayan civilization is also thought to have communicated with the dead.
Later in Northern Europe, conjure cards began to grow in popularity along with the Trump Game. Some versions of the Trump Game became the ancestor of modern Tarot Decks. These conjure cards, offenkundige karten, were also used by Spiritualists to speak with the dead.
The most recent version of conjure cards come in a 3×5 box. Entitled Konxari (kon-zar-ee) cards, the box print claims, the cards “Unlock secrets held by those on the other side.” That they are,”A supplement for your ghost hunting, séance, or spirit communication experience.”
Following typical Tarot Deck format, these cards come with a Little White Book (LWB). It contains dire warning, “Never use the cards alone.” There are also suggestions of places to use the cards that are more likely to have spirit activity.
The 88 cards of the Konxari Deck are smaller than most decks of cards, measuring approximately 2×3. The cards are divided into several categories each containing a representative photograph. The categories are:
- Sensory
- Character
- Location
- Victim
- Time
- Obstacles
- Equipment
- Energy
- Message
They also feature symbols, alchemical elements, astrological and religious glyphs along with directional arrows and colors.
Several examples of useful spreads are presented in the LWB, along with quick and expanded rules. There are also pages on additional use options and dowsing the cards with a pendulum.
During a recent Beyond Worlds interview with Donnaleigh de la Rose, the photographer, Paul Michael Kane, stated that no special effects or digital manipulation were used to create the concepts. He was given free-rein to use his own creativity.
This is an active deck of cards. I recently took mine for an outing to my Psychic Circle. Although I had not pulled them from their carrying bag, I removed them when a spirit insisted on speaking through them to another member of my circle. The message provided accurate insight to what she was experiencing in a relationship.
Regardless of the sometimes creepy and macabre subject matter of the cards, you’ll find the Konxari Cards a useful addition to your Mediumship tools.
